Leaves:
Alternate, simple, 3-5 inches long, 2-5 inches wide, with 5-9 pointed lobes separated by variable, but often wide, sinuses extending nearly to the midvein; scarlet fall color.
A common problem with this species is chlorosis which results form the soil pH being over 6.5-7. It causes yellowing or browning between the leaf veins and eventual decline of the tree.
The wood is used for rough lumber ad firewood. The acorns are eaten by waterfowl, turkeys, jays, woodpeckers, and squirrels.
