Sugar Maple
Sugar Maple
Tree Name:
Sugar Maple
Species:
Acer saccharum
Height Average:
70-100 ft tall
Leaves:
Opposite, simple, 3-5 inches long and wide, palmately lobed and veined, with five lobes separated by rounded, shallow sinuses; turning brilliant shades of red, yellow, and orange in the fall.
Acid rain and soil acidification are soem of the primary contributing factors to maple decline. The increased use of salt over the last several decades on streets and roads has decimated the sugar maples role as a street-front tree.
The wood is used for flooring, furniture, veneer and novelties. The trees are "tapped" for their sweet sap, which is used to make maple syrup and maple sugar.
