White Pine
White Pine
Tree Name:
Eastern White Pine
Species:
Pinus strobus
Height Average:
80-100 ft tall
Needles:
Soft bluish-green, flexible, 3-5 inches long, in bundles of 5; faint white stripes on lower surface of each needle.
Pine trees have shallow root system, which can make them more susceptible to wind damage and falling over. Shallow roots are also more likely to invade adjacent gardens and damage pavement and septic systems. It is recommended to plant them away from buildings and paved areas.
The wood is light in color, straight-grained, of medium strength, and easily worked. It is used for construction lumber, cabinet making, furniture and interior finish. White pine is also grown for Christmas trees.
