Redbud
Redbud
Tree Name:
Redbud
Species:
Cercis canadensis
Height Average:
15-30 ft tall
Leaves:
Alternate, simple, heart shaped, smooth edged, 3-5 inches long and wide.
Redbuds attract bagworms, which are caterpillars that turn into moths in the late summer or early fall. They can eat enough leaves off trees during their larval phase that the trees die.
The wood is heavy, hard, not strong, and rich, dark brown in color. It has little commerical value. Some birds and mammals eat the seeds. Redbud is planted as an ornamental tree suitable for small landscapes.
